About the Study

Aims: The USC Music, Mind, and Memory Study aims to understand how our brains process feelings like nostalgia and how music can remain such a powerful tool in evoking memories throughout our lives. The current arm of the study is interested in looking at how these processes develop in older adults with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI).

What does participating in this study entail?

  1. Completing a screening survey to assess eligibility.

  2. Completing an initial Zoom appointment with a researcher (1 hour), where you will complete several memory tasks.

  3. Completing an online survey, where you will listen to music, report your feelings about music, and answer questions about yourself.

  4. Complete a follow-up Zoom appointment with a researcher (30 minutes to an hour), where you will listen to more music and answer more questions about how you feel.

  5. Come to the USC Brain and Creativity Institute for an in-person visit, where you will complete a 1-hour neuroimaging scan using functional MRI (fMRI). During the scan, you will listen to pieces of music. After the scan, we will ask you to listen to more music and answer more questions about yourself. The entire in-person visit will take approximately 2-3 hours.

Participation is voluntary. Participants will be compensated $20 per hour for their time.
